With a job title like Creator of Opportunities, it’s no surprise that NOTION’s Janelle Fenwick spends her days focussing on connection and possibility. “I’m really lucky to work with a company that lets me go off on my own tangents and come up with new ideas and ways of creating value,” she says.
Janelle’s latest venture is Teulo, a progressive digital education platform for architects, designers and building professionals. Separate from NOTION but working closely together, Teulo is the online Continuing Professional Development (CPD) initiative which compliments live CPD-accredited event series, NOTION_flo.
A big believer and supporter of ongoing education, Janelle is passionate about supporting professionals in the building industry with opportunities for lifelong learning. “I’ve been in the industry for 15 years, on both the product side and the specification side. During that time, I noticed a gap in the middle where the education piece was missing. Architects work with a huge range of products. How are they supposed to become an expert on all of them? This is where those presentation and storytelling skills really come into play for suppliers.”
Participation in CPD-accredited activities keeps industry skills current for practising professionals and is a critical requirement for license renewal but Janelle acknowledges that the CPD system in NZ can be confusing for educators and manufacturers. “Registered Architects, architectural designers and licensed building practitioners all have different point systems and learning competencies. This creates a lot of opportunity for manufacturers in the industry to create CPD-learning content than can reach those specific target audiences.”

This is exactly what NOTION and Teulo are now working on together. “There’s a real synergy between the two businesses. All the customers that come on board with Teulo have to go on the NOTION_pro Presenting with Purpose and Advanced Storytelling courses. This is so that we can get really good quality content from Teulo which meets the required learning outcomes for Continuing Professional Development. These courses provide those key skills around storytelling and presenting to architects and designers.”
Janelle says that “taking part isn’t just one transaction that stops with the workshop. It’s an ongoing journey; a nurturing relationship that continues to grow. They go from learning how to better craft their stories to actually doing it.” With this training, customers can learn the skills necessary to create and deliver successful and compelling presentations. They can then take that knowledge on to NOTION_flo events where they can make CPD-accredited live presentations, or to Teulo where they can film CPD-accredited content and put it online.”
So, what makes a really great presentation? Janelle thinks it’s pretty simple: passion about what you’re doing with the technical knowledge to back it up. With those two key components you’ll be able to get real, tangible benefits out of attending a NOTION_pro course. There’s also a bit of a mind-shift that happens away from trying to sell your product towards trying to educate your target market, she says. “We help presenters start to think about how they’re adding value to their potential customers.”
Janelle cites the journey of Abodo Wood as one of their biggest success stories to date. Their Technical Director, Ben, attended both of the NOTION_pro courses and Janelle says “the difference in his presentations before and after was absolutely incredible. And our work with Abodo Wood didn’t stop there. Teulo helped Abodo Wood to create the 14-episode Abodo Presents podcast series in which Daniel, the founder of Abodo Wood, interviews architects and designers.”
This is a great example of how the benefits can go far beyond the classroom. Once presenters master those key presentation skills, they can then use them to present at live industry events or online forums where they can reach audiences that they might not otherwise have had access to. This provides brand awareness and networking opportunities which Janelle believes are even more critical in the post-Covid landscape. “It’s more important now than ever for professionals to learn speaking skills which can translate online; how to energise their voice and reach clients remotely.” She has attended both courses, herself, and credits them with really helping her craft her own online content for Teulo.
NOTION’s Creator of Opportunities shows no signs of slowing down. “The key thing for me is that I really love dealing with architects and designers here in NZ that are doing amazing things but I’m also really passionate about seeing what’s going on out there in the world; keeping an eye on the global aspects and all the technology that’s being used in consultation and design. I get to meet all these amazingly cool people doing mind-blowing stuff.”
Her best advice for anyone considering a course is “don’t consider, just do it! Knowledge is power, right?”
